The Woods Do Not Want Us Here

Nafre de la Toundra I fucking love it. The title hooked me, spiritually. No, the woods (or the swamp, or the tundra) do not want to share « here » with us... Katie’s voice is really great: graceful for a mistaken instant, menacing throughout. The poem I read as a lament at once ancient and modern, with interpretations for both meanings. And Meaghan hits it, especially with that violin... Again: I fucking love it.

We are in so deep
The birds have stopped singing

We follow the cries
Of our newborn child

The witch has taken him
For her flying ointment
In his place she left
A doll of twine moss and rabbit bones

We are in so deep
The birds have stopped singing

But the trees draw closer
And the sky grows darker
And the ground begins to shift beneath our feet
Then we hear laughing
Then we hear our names

Our child has stopped crying
There is no sound at all

We follow the stench of centuries of evil
The woods do not want us here
The woods do not want us here

We are in so deep
The birds have stopped singing

And then up ahead we see
A hut risen from the ground
And through the open door
Our child’s arm hanging over the rim
Of a black iron cauldron

We are in so deep
The birds have stopped singing
